健二：なに？
愛花：創作ダンスでね、満点がもらえたの！
健二：おっ、やったな！
愛花：うん、ありがとう。あなたとリフレッシュした次の日にね、急に体がリズムと会い出して。小さい頃、補助輪のついてない自転車に初めて乗れたときのこと、思い出しちゃった。
健二：あー、それ、何となくわかる気がする。
愛花：ふふっ。…ね、もし、あなたも何か煮詰まっちゃったりしたら、言ってね。言いにくかったら、ただ、寄りかかって？わたしもただ、あなたのそばに居るから。…なんて！ね。今日はわたしがご馳走しちゃう。何がいい？
健二：（よかった！）
Kenji’s luck seems to be looking very good today.
ラブレターをもらう
During recess, Kenji talks about Valentine’s Day.
健二：そろそろさ、例の時期だな？バレンタイン！
愛花：期待、してくてれるの？
健二：もっちろん！
愛花：…先に、謝らせて？ごめんなさい。
健二：え！ど、どうして？
愛花：…上手に出来すぎて、ほっぺたが落ちちゃうかもしれないから♥ ふふっ！
健二：（ああ、びっくりした…。けど、楽しみだ！）
Manaka sends him a
message. She wants to meet him at 12 at the library.
愛花：あのね。お昼休みに会えないかな。図書室に12時でいい？
健二：もちろん行く！
愛花：よかった。廊下で待ってるから、またあとでね。
Current time
is 1105 hrs. T-35 minutes.
Kenji reaches the hallway early. Manaka meets him soon
after.
After talking for a while at the library, they hide
away at the shelves to kiss.
愛花：あなただけど、いい…。
During lunch break…
健二：ところでさ…。
愛花：うん。なに？
健二：マナカちゃんってさ。小さい頃。どんな子だった？
愛花：小さい頃？うーん、習い事ばっかり。
健二：へぇ…どんなのやってたんだ？
愛花：水泳でしょ、お習字、ピアノ、バレエ、テニスとあとは…あ、学習塾も。
健二：忙しそうだな、そりゃ…親にやらされてたとか？
愛花：ううん。どっちかって言うと、自分から。だれだれちゃんが習い始めたって聞くと、わたしもやる、って。なんだかね、すごく、がんんばってたの。今考えると、おかしいけど。
She has
quite the initiative.
健二：（負けず嫌いだったんだな…わかる気がする）
It seems more like
she is a competitive person instead.
They walk home from school together. Kenji then goes
for his work.
During the evening, he goes to a live performance by
some jazz band グレイジャケッツ.
Kenji finds it great.
Kenji goes to sleep. He thinks to himself that he
might be having a good dream tonight. Just before falling asleep, he imagines
Manaka telling him: わたしはね、バラのように駆け回るの！
健二：そろそろ寝るか。今日はなんとなくいい夢が見られる気がするぞ。
He drifts off to sleep.
健二：（ん？ここはどこだ？）
愛花：えぇと、今日は学習塾で、明日はピアノで、明後日はバレエ…それから…。
That voice
sounds familiar… Is that your girlfriend, Kenji?
健二：（んん？あの子、どこかで見たような…やけに寂しそうに見えるけど、どうしたんだろう）
愛花：なんですか、お兄さん。愛花のことじっと見て。
She seems
very young. Looks like she’s still in elementary school.
健二：ちょっと気になって…君、愛花ちゃんって言うの？
愛花：はい、高嶺 愛花。小学２年生です。
Huh.
Guessed correctly. But why is she in elementary school? And what are you doing here, Kenji?
健二：（マナカちゃん!?た、確かに…。でも、この格好は…）
Kenji asks about the bag Manaka is carrying. There is
a picture of two rabbits on a crescent moon on that bag.

He then asks about the red rucksack Manaka is
carrying.
愛花：…ランドセルが珍しいですか？
Info piece: A ランドセル
is a firm-sided rucksack used by Japanese elementary school children, often red
for girls and black for boys. The Japanese word is adapted from the Dutch word
“ransel”, which is also used in Bahasa Indonesia to mean any kind of rucksack. A
highly durable bag, it is designed to last the 6 years of elementary school,
but with care, can last all the way until adult life.
Kenji starts wondering about that strange keychain at the
rucksack which has a heart on it.
Big mistake. The thing starts sounding.
愛花：きゃっ！それは防犯ブザーです！
That is an alarm buzzer.
That’ll
teach you to have itchy fingers, Kenji.
愛花：もう！勝手にいろいろ触らないでください！
Sheesh.
健二：ごめん…。
愛花：愛花は急いでるんです。お兄さんと遊んでいる暇はありません。
健二：愛花ちゃんは、いつもこうして一人で帰ってるの？他の子たちは？
愛花：！ みんなは、まだ学校で遊んでるから…。
I guess
some sacrifices have to be made…
健二：だったら、愛花ちゃんも学校で遊んだら？
愛花：愛花は今日、塾があるから…明日はピアノのお稽古だし、いつもみんな早く帰らないといけなくて…。
健二：（そっか。習い事、たくさんしてたって言ってたもんな…自分からやりたいって言ってたらしいけど…やっぱり、友だちと遊べないのは寂しかったのかも…）
愛花：ところでお兄さんは、ここで何を？
健二：え…それは、愛花ちゃんが寂しそうな顔をしてたから…。
愛花：寂しくなんてないです…習い事だって、パパとママがほめてくれますから、寂しくはありません。
健二：そう？本当に？
愛花：…。
健二：愛花ちゃん？
After pausing for a while, Manaka starts to break down…
愛花：ほっ…本当はっ、ねっ…ちょっ…ぴり、さびし…っく…！
So she actually was
feeling lonely all this while…
健二：…うん…。
愛花：でもね、そんなっ…こと、言ったら…パパと、ママが…。

can’t stand to hear anyone cry.
健二：よしよし。いいよ、大丈夫。…よし、愛花ちゃん。今日は、お兄ちゃんと遊ぼうか。
愛花：えっ？…塾があるから…怒られちゃう…。
健二：大丈夫。ちゃんと、お兄ちゃんが一緒に謝ってあげるから。
愛花：ほっ…ほんとう…？
健二：本当だよ。楽しいこと、たくさんしよう？だから、泣くな。
愛花：お兄ちゃん…っ！
警官：君…！
Oh shit it’s
the cops!
健二：へっ？お巡りさん？
警官：防犯ブザーが鳴っていたようだが…君、何をしているのかね？

健二：えっと、間違って押してしまって…ね？愛花ちゃん？
愛花：うんっ…お兄ちゃんは、愛花に塾を休めって…。愛花と遊んでくれるって！
…That’s not
exactly helping Kenji’s case, Manaka.
警官：…ちょっと交番まで来てもらおうか…。
健二：説明が悪いよ、マナカちゃん！ご、誤解だーっ！
Dayum.
健二：確かに可愛いとは思ったけど！
Kenji wakes up.
健二：…え？あれ？…夢か…。
He checks his phone. Manaka has sent him a message.
愛花：あのね。お芋に多く含まれてる栄養素はなんだっけ？

This has got to be the most random question I have seen in a while.
Kenji evaluates his options…

- 炭水化物
Seems like
carbohydrate is the correct answer. The other two are fats and protein.
健二：炭水化物
愛花：ありがと。ごめんね、へんなこと聞いちゃって。
