Kenji then goes to the planetarium.

Kenji returns home to sleep. He imagines Manaka
telling him

What's so
significant about Suginami district?
Urban area, mostly apartments. While it is very
convenient for Kenji to go to work if they live there, Manaka probably wouldn’t
be used to it.

information as if they are definitely going to get married and live together?

This might be the reason for the throwaway line about
Suginami district: “Suginami Disease”, which was caused by a massive
incinerator burning plastic in the 90s. Elevated cases of cancer in nearby
neighborhoods where the smoke drifted to, most likely by dioxin contamination.
Note that back then, 75% of trash in Japan was incinerated.
Actually, even today, Japan only recycles 20.8% of its waste, with most of the
rest incinerated.
Compare that with Singapore, where recycling rate is 59%, the highest rate in the world.
Holy shit I didn’t
know we lead in recycling rates.
Then again, it is a necessity. We also lead the world in
terms of tons of municipal solid waste/km2, at 9857.7tMSW/km2.
Japan has a value of 124.4tMSW/km2. Shit will literally
hit the fan if we don’t do this level of recycling.
Most of the waste sent to recycling in Singapore is from
industrial sources, and those are some rather heavy hitters. Especially notable
is the near-100% recycling rate of construction debris.
Anyway, back to Suginami, apparently the Suginami problem
is fixed now, but considering the whole fiasco ended 2002 and the game released
2009, such a reference could still have been recognisable.
