Moonstone’s Notes: Some things I found

While searching Manaka on Google so as to find out what her original look is like without having to dig deep down into this blog (not that there are a lot of pictures anyway), I found a rather interesting blog of this guy who got the enhanced 3DS version and went with Rinko. It’s a very well-designed blog, way better than this[1].

Unlike my interaction with the Kenji-Manaka pair as an advisor-wingman, the author of that blog put himself as Rinko’s boyfriend.

My method ensures that I have a mental separation between myself and Manaka, and gives Kenji the freedom to do things that I would never want to do in real life, which is why I wrote in the lore that Kenji is impulsive and sometimes disobey his wingman. In fact, I have originally intended for Kenji to have a completely different personality from me. I wasn’t very good at it: I ended up creating a character that is practically a copy of my own personality, but way more physically active, way more confident, and way more impulsive. I guess that kind of personality is what gets the girls.

At first I was wondering how that blog author managed to take so many pictures of Rinko[2], considering that for me to do that, I have to copy my save file to my computer, run the file on an emulator, then take a screenshot. For this process, I can only take pictures of events that have already occurred and can be replayed (like weekend dates). Turns out the enhanced 3DS version allows taking screenshots within the game itself, but the internal game camera can only go up to 40 shots (5 shots initial) and needs a separate lens to zoom to 3×. Seriously? I’ve had ancient cameras[3] that took 3 times as many pictures and had 3× zoom out of the box[4]!

The enhanced 3DS version also includes a whole new series of features, including new places. I definitely couldn’t keep a straight face when I saw Aisha diner, since I once worked with a lab officer whose name was pronounced almost exactly like that. That version now also includes a currency system, which resolves the logistical issues regarding how the hell the main character is able to manage taking his girlfriend out for dates in the DS versions.

I don’t really like the graphics of the enhanced 3DS version since the character models actually became rather unsettling when brought to the higher-definition 3D system. Or maybe it’s just the 3400K screen adjustment that I switched to for night time. Anyway, it’s highly unlikely I would be getting the 3DS version since the 3DS games are region-locked. Total bummer. Can’t believe Nintendo still does region locking in such a globalised world, but since they also put out Pokémon, I can’t really say too much.

Anyway, back to the blog author. He also decided to take a path with Manaka (that two-timing son of a bitch!)[5]. He noted that Manaka doesn’t like Ferris wheels. Apparently I should have noted that in the many times I’ve told Kenji to bring her up: I will tell Kenji if I ever need to[6]. At least there is one thing we agree on: Manaka has style; Rinko doesn’t.

Also, there was a series of iOS apps that links to the 3DS games, but as of 11 September 2015, they are no longer available in the App Store. So that’s what OreImo S2E2 was parodying. I didn’t know the parody actually goes that deep. Should have downloaded the app and stored it on the computer before it got discontinued.

Other random thoughts:

  • 3-week anniversary. What the fuck.
  • “Actually, the good news is that she (Rinko) lets you off after you say it five or six times, and says that she was only kidding. You wake up feeling VERY relieved. I guess this is the moment when some players might stop and think about whether they should have dated Manaka instead.” I showed Kenji that sequence, considering he never saw it, and his face turned white[7]. He definitely stayed with Manaka.
  • The blog started 26 February 2012. The relationship started 21 March 2012 after a trial run on the English-patched DS version and a corrupted save file. It continued on until 21 May 2014 when. It. Just. Stopped. I wonder what happened to the author. I hope he found a girlfriend for real.
  • During my scan around, I found a video of one more holiday scene that for some reason Kenji hasn’t triggered. From my observations, the correct option would be to enter the “family bathroom” with swimwear. There is another option to enter the bathroom “like a man”[8]. Doing so would trigger the girlfriend to scream at the main character and slap him out of the bathroom. Most entertaining scream I have ever heard so far (able to trigger my “laugh and facepalm” reaction[9]), but I’m pretty sure it’s not anywhere as entertaining for either party involved.

[1] I don’t intend on improving site design unless someone other than me reads it.
[2] Rinko is actually my least favourite among the 3, but then again, there is a reason for having a choice of 3 girls to choose from.
[3] Yes, I’m old enough to have used 35mm film cameras. I even have a Canon EOS 888 that was handed down from my father that still works.
[4] The Vivitar PZ 3125, which I have used as well, uses a 36-exposure 35mm film and a zoom lens between 38mm-125mm (~3.2× zoom).
[5] The blog author likes twin-tails: my least favourite hairstyle for girls.
[6] Added note to self: Manaka has motion-sickness and possible vertigo.
[7] To be fair, my own face turned white too.
[8] Knowing Kenji, he’d probably choose that option. I’ll make sure I stop him before he does.
