Last I
remembered from my tennis lessons, they are done by putting the racket at an
upwards angle. This is very difficult to execute without bouncing the ball out
of the court, but if done correctly, can create a drop shot, which is very
difficult for the opponent to return.
健二：無理！
Not
impossible, just really hard. I’m sure Manaka can manage it. Not sure about
you. I know I can’t.
愛花：どうして？やってた人がいるってリナ先輩が言ってたよ。
Backspins
are more effective on grass and clay courts, but not so much on the standard
hard court. It still gives an element of unpredictability regardless of
surface, though.
健二：リナ先輩って、地区のランキングに入ってる人だよな…。サーブでバックスピン？
Oh wait, a
serve backspin? I’m pretty sure that’s physically impossible. The most
technical players run with a lateral spin serve to bounce the ball more to the
side.
There are a few serves commonly used: the flat serve
(direct hit, most common), the slice serve (already mentioned by Moonstone) and
the kick serve (less common, requires a very flexible wrist).
The kick serve requires the right leg to kick up to the
back to maintain balance.
Huh, so that’s why
I always sucked at serving. I was only taught the kick serve despite having a
stiff wrist and never being taught to kick my right leg to the back. I guess
I’ll stick to flat serves if I ever pick up the racket again.
愛花：どうやるんだろう？
健二：オーバーサーブだったらバックスピンは無理だろ、アンダーってことかな、こうか…？
The only
spin you can apply in a serve is lateral spin. Longitudinal spin cannot be
controlled in a serve.
愛花：それ、スライスじゃない？
健二：スライスサーブじゃないよ。この角度で…こう…。
愛花：ラケットがないと、わからないね。
健二：だから、こうだって。こう！〈バシッ！〉
Kenji falls down.
愛花：大丈夫っ？
健二：な、なんでもない。

They walk home from school together.
健二：ダンスの練習はどう？…マナカ姫？
愛花：うん、もう少し…。みんなも、きっかけさえ掴めれば大丈夫って言ってくれてるし。
健二：うん。
愛花：でも、もう来週も発表だし…わたし…。
健二：マナカちゃん。このあと、ヒマ？
愛花：えっ？帰って、ダンスの練習しようかなって…。
健二：それさ、ちょっと休もう？思いつめても良くないし…それに、ちょっとは頼ってほしいんだけど？
愛花：あなたが…ダンス、教えてくれるの？
健二：そうそう、そうやって冗談言えるくらいの余裕がないと。さて、お茶行こう。
愛花：わたし、ケーキ食べたい。
健二：いいぞ、ご馳走してやる。
愛花：ふふっ、やった。…ありがとう、元気出そう。
健二：（これくらいしか俺にはできないもんな…頑張れ、マナカちゃん）
They hold hands and kiss on the way home.
Kenji then goes to the shopping mall to buy a present
for Manaka.
健二：（そうだ。マナカ姫にプレゼントしようと思ってたんだ）
Kenji evaluates his options

He decides to go to the boutique, after consultation
from his wingman.
Hey man, I
have no idea what I’m doing here.
店員：いらっしゃいませー。
健二：プレゼント、ここで買おうかな…。
He evaluates his options once again

- やめておく
Last I
checked, Manaka didn’t like the qipao. The puff sleeved shirt is also looking
like a bad idea, and the cheerleader outfit is definitely not Manaka’s style.
Seeing no good options, Kenji leaves the mall.
健二：（別の店の方がいいかな…）
店員：ありがとうございましたー。
Kenji receives a message from Manaka as he returns
home.
愛花：あのね。わたしの髪型なんだけど、下ろしてるのと結ってるの、どっちが好きかな？
健二：結ってる方がいい！
愛花：そっか、それなら髪は結うようにしようかな。その方が、喜んでくれるよね
He goes to sleep. He imagines Manaka telling him
