Today’s
Tanabata, using the Western calendar. Though Tanabata is also a Chinese event
(known as 乞巧节), it is not commonly followed around here and follows
the Chinese lunar calendar. This year’s 乞巧节
will be on 20 August.
Kenji meets up with Manaka on the way to school.
愛花：ねえ。今日、七夕だね？
健二：そっか…特に気にしてなかったな。
Me too.
This is not an event we Chinese Singaporeans care about much either, whether in
solar or lunar calendar.
愛花：願い事は？
No idea for
now.
健二：んー、ぽっとは思いつかないな。
愛花：じゃあ、これあげる。
Manaka passes Kenji something.
健二：え？…これ、短冊？
愛花：うん、これに願い事書いたら、お庭の笹に飾ってあげる。
健二：いいの？じゃ、何か考えておくかな。
愛花：ふふ、お願いね？
Kenji then receives a message from Manaka.
愛花：あのね。パパとママは新婚旅行で熱海に行ったんだって。きっと素敵な旅だったんだろうな…
Kenji walks to the corridor.
健二：ん、なんだこれ…。
健二：…。
健二：ふーん、海水浴場で水着コンテストか…。
健二：（マナカ姫だったら、どうかな…。）
Manaka meets up with him outside the club room.
愛花：健二くん。
健二：マナカ姫。
愛花：ねえ、願い事、思いついた？
健二：まだ。そういや、マナカ姫のは？
愛花：わたしのは…あなたが見せてくれたら、見せてあげる。
健二：そっか…じゃあ、まずに俺が書かないとな。
愛花：そういうこと。じゃあね。
Manaka then walks away.
健二：うーん。（でもまあ、俺の願い事って言ったら…）
Not cool,
SMRT. Not cool.
Both main
lines of the train service broke down during the evening, delaying me for an
inordinate amount of time.
After school, the two meet up at the school gate.
愛花：短冊、書けた？
Now I know
what to wish for this Tanabata: for the damn trains to stop breaking down.
健二：ああ、うん。はいこれ。
Kenji passes her the note containing his wish.
Manaka blushes as she reads the note.
愛花：…。
健二：マナカ姫とずっと一緒に幸せでいられますように。…って、今更だけど。
My wishes
are a lot more pragmatic, but then again it fulfils an immediate need.
愛花：ふふ…。
健二：改めて読まれると照れるな…。マナカ姫のは？
愛花：見せる必要、ないかな？
健二：なんで、ずるいって！
愛花：だって一緒だったんだもん。二人でこの願い事したら、叶うに決まってるよね？
健二：マナカ姫…。
They then kiss at the school gate.
Kenji returns home and does his hobby.
健二：今日は有意義な時間を過ごせたな。なんか調子いいぞ！
Kenji then goes to sleep. He imagines Manaka telling
him
骨の髄まで、抱きしめて。
That’s
actually a little creepy.
