date in the indoor pool.
They decide to talk
at the café near the pool before they enter the pool.
健二：（そういえば誕生日のリクエスト、まだ考えてなかった…）
One day before your birthday. Not much wiggle
room for Manaka here.
愛花：こ・ら。
健二：え⁉
愛花：ふふっ、バレバレだよ？その様子から察するに、まだ決めてないな？
健二：はい…。
愛花：もう。こんなに悩ませるつもりはなかったんだけどな…ね、ここからはわたしに任せてもらっていい？その代り…ひとりでそんなに考え込まないで。
Eh, she’s right. I’m sure she’ll pick
something nice for you.
健二：あ…そうだな。
愛花：ううん、わたしもよくなかったから。お祝いするつもりなのに、悩ませちゃって。
健二：（かえって気を遣わせちゃったな…気をつけよう）
Later at the
pool.
健二：〈バシッ！〉
Can you not slip and fall every time you go to
play at the pool?
健二：イテテ…びっくりした。
Didn’t think so.
愛花：大丈夫⁉もう…走っちゃダメって言ったのに。
健二：…ゴメンナサイ。
愛花：次、転びそうなときは、わたしのほうに倒れてね？がっちり、受け止めてあげる♥
健二：（やった！けど、一緒にひっくり返りそうな気もする…）
Make sure if you fall together, fall in the
direction of the pool. The water will probably soften the impact.
They kiss at the
indoor pool.
愛花：キス…また、してくれる？
It’s almost as if she knows what will happen
soon.
Manaka still
wants to be with Kenji, so Kenji suggests going to the movies.
On the way to the
cinema…
愛花：ふふ、かわいいカップル。…なんて言ったら、失礼かな？
健二：おじいさんもおばあさんも、ニコニコしてていい感じだな。
愛花：あんな風に歳を重ねていけたら、きっと幸せだろうなぁ。
健二：うん。俺らの目標にしようか？
愛花：ふふっ、賛成。ちょっとずつ近づいていけるといいね？
They arrive at
the cinema. Today’s films are a horror flick and an action flick.
Naturally Kenji
chooses the action flick.
Dafuq kind of gun is that guy using?
愛花：楽しかったね！
健二：ああ。すごかったなー、あの主役のアクション！
愛花：うん、びっくりしちゃった。あれだけ体を動かせれば、楽しいだろうね？
I know Keanu Reeves enjoyed acting in the John
Wick series.
健二：イケそうだけどな？ボディコントロールは得意そうだし。
Some actors do their own stunts. Jackie Chan,
Tom Cruise… It’s pretty cool actually.
愛花：ふふ。それはあなたもでしょう？
Lolnope. Didn’t you just see him slip and fall
just now in the indoor pool?
健二：まあな。
愛花：ね、二人でアクションスター、目指しちゃう？
健二：それもいいかもな？果ては夫婦アクションスターとして名を馳せる！みたいな。
Manaka gives
Kenji a wide eyed look, then looks down, embarrassed.
Seriously, with all that talk of wanting to
walk down the aisle with Kenji, she really should have seen it coming.
愛花：…。
健二：ん？
愛花：あなたって…うぅん、いい。
健二：（…？）
<slaps back of Kenji’s head>
They kiss at the
cinema.
After that, they
have lunch at the family restaurant.
健二：そろそろ文化祭だな。
愛花：うん。みんな、テンション上がっててなかなか作業が進まないんだけど本当に、準備終わるのかな…。
健二：それは神のみぞ知る。
愛花：ふふっ、それかも。ねぇ、時間って取れそうかな。
健二：取れる、つーか取れる！一緒にいろいろ見て回ろうな。オバケ屋敷とか。オバケ屋敷とか。
A bit enthusiastic about the haunted house
aren’t we?
愛花：いいけど…どうして２回言ったの？
健二：あー、いや。いいなぁと思って、オバケ屋敷。
愛花：…残念でした。
Awww… ☹
健二：？
愛花：わたし、そっち方面は平気のへっちゃらなの。ヘンなこと期待してもムダなんだから。
健二：（…これは素なのか？それとも強がり？）
On the way back…
愛花：ああいうアパートのお部屋の広さって、どれくらいかな？
I’d say from 60 sq ft for three-room flats to
over 110 sq ft for five-roomers in Singapore. The house that I am typing out
this report from is around 140 sq ft. Definitely smaller than your house,
Manaka. That’s probably over 1000 sq ft.
健二：いいとこ四畳半ってとこじゃないか？あそこまで古いと、もっと狭いかもな。
By the way, 4½ tatami mats is 80 sq ft. Tatami mats are
used as a measurement standard for room sizes in Japan.
That would make it between the size of a
three-roomer and a four-roomer here. In my case, that size would mean deleting
all the rooms in the house I live in and just keeping the living room, the
dining room, the kitchen and the toilets.
Even so, owning your apartment here in
Singapore is the norm (90.3% as of 2014), and allegedly it is public policy to
“help foster a sense of belonging to Singapore” and “provide Singaporeans with
a means of financial security and a hedge against inflation”. Not arguing with
that logic: I like the idea of not being in danger of being evicted like being
a tenant does. Last time I did my report on home ownership in 2012, home
ownership in Singapore is 88.3%. Japan’s home ownership rate is way lower, at
61.6% as of 2008, but this data is outdated since it is from 2008 and thus is
before the 2011 Tohoku earthquake/tsunami. There is a 2013 (平成25) report, but until I can read the entire
thing, this will have to wait.
愛花：二人で住むには、さすがに手狭だよね？
Well, a cut of surroundings to 10% of the
original area would definitely make an impact.
健二：うん、まあ…え？
You heard her. She is totally imagining a
future with you.
愛花：ふふっ、独り言！
They arrive at
Manaka’s home. Manaka wants to be with Kenji for a bit longer.
愛花：帰りたくないわたしを、あやしてくれる？
And so Kenji
gives Manaka a goodbye kiss before she returns home.
