I’ve fallen behind
due to a temporary job I have taken to fund my Japan trip.
Train viaduct
inspection. Exhausting, but quite satisfying. Beats sitting in an office and
rotting.
And then the trip
to Japan. Awesome trip. 9/10 would go again. Had to dock a point because I
spent all my money on my experiences in Japan.
Atami was a solid
2/10 though.
30 April, Saturday
0800 hrs
Time for your
holiday, Kenji!
Kenji hurries over to Shin-Towano Station.
健二：（あ、マナカちゃん。もう来てる）
愛花：おはよう。いいてんきだね。向こうもずっと晴れだって。
健二：おはよ。そっか、よかった。
Kenji notices Manaka’s new hairstyle. She has decided
to tie most of her hair (except for her fringe) back and added two small
ribbons to her hair.
健二：マナカちゃん、その髪…。
愛花：うん、旅行バージョン。なんて。どう？
健二：（うーん…）
No. Her
fringe is a way too narrow.
健二：前の方がよかったな。
愛花：うそ…。やだ、どうしよう。
Aw don’t be
so sad, Manaka. I get bad haircuts as well.
The
question for my side would be how is it possible to mess up a high slope
haircut?
健二：（うん、前の方がよかったよな）
Her outfit this time is a blue frilled blouse with
pink and white patterning.
愛花：今日の服は？似合ってる？
健二：最高、バッチリ！

They take the subway line to Towano Station.
健二：えっと…。
愛花：乗り換え、向こうだよ。忘れちゃった？
健二：あ、そうだった。
The big
question is why the bullet train would be in the old station rather than the
new station. I know the bullet train goes to Shin-Osaka instead of Osaka and
Shin-Yokohama instead of Yokohama. So why is it reversed here?
Here’s why:
Towano seems to be modelled closer to Shizuoka than the larger cities of
Yokohama or Osaka. Shizuoka has a Shin-Shizuoka station that is used for the
local train line while the main Shizuoka station is used for the bullet train.
So in this case, it actually made sense.
Except the
real Shizuoka doesn’t have the connectivity Towano offers. Shizuoka has only
one line. Towano seems to have various lines that quickly and conveniently
serve all the major areas of Towano, from mountain areas to shore lines.

They then transfer on to the express train.
It is
entirely likely the pair did not take the bullet train. Atami station is the
border station of JR East and JR Central, and there are other trains on the
Tokaido Main Line that are relatively quick. Furthermore, the longer-distance
trains have Green Cars which have reclining forward-facing seats akin to what
was seen in the train scene. Also, the only bullet train service that services
Atami is the Kodama, which does not occur very commonly.

They step off the train to the station.
愛花：前来たときと、なにか変わってるかな。
Now I know
this game is bullshit, because it was never this noisy in Atami when I went
there.

laugh. Atami seemed like the kind of town that doesn’t change in a decade.

After kissing, Manaka moves closer to Kenji.

They walk down the sakura-lined main street.
Fallout has
corrupted me. I nearly instinctively typed “lead-lined”.
I know Atami
has deteriorated, but it will never get this bad.

It’s almost
spooky how I managed to anticipate that line.

They walk to the Omiya no Matsu.

Another
reason this game is bullshit: the damn place is too deserted for there to be
anyone. Perfect if you are looking for a holiday where you can be with your
girlfriend, alone against the wide world.
Not so
perfect if you are a solo warrior like me.
健二：え？
男Ａ：この像の前で写真撮りたいんで、カレシさんシャッター押してくれません？
女Ａ：お願いしまーす。
健二：はい、もちろん。
Kenji then takes a photo for the pair.
Kenji and Manaka return to the main street afterwards.

愛花：誰も知ってる人がいないところでも、わたしたちちゃんと恋人同士に見えるんだ。

After kissing, they proceed on to Izusan Shrine.
They arrive at the entrance of Izusan Shrine.
Another
reason I now know this game is bullshit: there is no painless method to go from
Omiya no Matsu to Izusan Shrine. The best route requires a 900 metre walk to
Atami station first to board the Nanaohara bus (七尾原方面行き) to the entrance of the shrine.
The way
less pleasant alternative, which I took, is a 2km walk along the road to the
bottom of the stairs (way before the entrance to Izusan Shrine), and then
another 350m on stairs just to the entrance.
健二：うわ、これ登るのか…。何段あるんだ？
愛花：ここからだと600段くらいかな。もっと下からだと800段以上あるんだって。
Considering
my sources show no significance for the number of steps, it’s actually
impressive Manaka actually noted the number.
健二：…。

They reach the top of the hill to the shrine.
健二：あー！終わったー！
愛花：ふふ、楽勝！さすが十羽野テニス部！

I’d
probably drop dead within a month if I run with his schedule.
In fact, I
nearly dropped dead walking up those exact stairs. Those >800 stairs I had
to climb just to climb those ~600 stairs in the shrine didn’t help either.
健二：まかせてとけって！…でもマナカちゃんはもっと余裕そうだな。
愛花：そんなんことないよ。ハアハア言ってるもん。
At least

failed my Math last semester.

After a while, they walk to an oceanfront restaurant
Hana no Yosei (花の妖精).

After
checking on Google Maps, my assessment is official: your trip planning sucks.
Anyway, if
you want to go there from Izusan Shrine, you need to take the bus from the
front to Izusan Shrine back to Atami Station, then take the sightseeing bus 湯～游～バス from Atami Station (1) to Nishigaura-Iriguchi 錦ヶ浦入口 (9), then walk down the road away from the main road
to Hana no Yosei. It is not marked in the official guide map, so you will
really need prior knowledge to actually know of this place.
To get
there you need to pass the ropeway and most of the interesting parts of Atami.
It’s at the border line between Atami and the Minami-Atami region.
This
clearly isn’t a “I saw this along the way and decided to try it” location.

They then take their seat within the restaurant.

though, 2 nights and 1 day is more than enough for Atami.
Especially
if I arrange my locations properly unlike you guys.

They reach the main street.

They kiss at the bottom of the ropeway before going

They get on the ropeway gondola.
I’ve been
on the real-life gondola. It’s the definition of decrepit.
Also, there
is no way you can have some private time since the gondola is controlled from
inside the gondola as well.
健二：おお、動いてる。結構速いな。
愛花：うん、すぐ着いちゃいそう。ねぇ、着くまで手握ってていい？
健二：いいけど、なんで？やっぱ怖い？
愛花：ううん。違うけど、いいでしょ？

They didn’t
pass by the Hihokan this trip, but here’s another reason why the game is
bullshit: There is absolutely no way to exit the ropeway at the top of the
mountain without having to pass by the entrance of the Hihokan.
And the
entrance of the Hihokan has a topless mermaid displayed there.
So unless
you rolled a natural 1 in your Spot check, you would definitely notice that
it’s got nothing to do with gemstones.
They walk over to Atami Castle.

They go to the open-air bathhouse.
This is not a shared bathhouse (duh), so they go to
their separate sections.

Kenji then hears Manaka enter the bathhouse.

He calls out to Manaka through the separation.

They go to the summit of the ropeway where they were.
The ropeway
doesn’t open until that late. That means they would have to walk all the way
up.
Since Hotel
Ohnoya is near the hill, it is possible to walk that distance (1.6 km). I can’t
really do that from the hotel I stayed at since it is closer to the station
instead and I would have to walk 2.4 km.
愛花：あ…。
健二：すげえ…。
愛花：キレイ、すごい…。

健二：はは、だよな。
愛花：そんなの、だめだもん…。
健二：（マナカちゃん？）
Manaka then falls asleep with Kenji just beside her.

what, I’m just going to leave Manaka there right next to Kenji.

愛花：健二くん。おはよう。
健二：おはよう、ドクター。
Manaka wants to change, and asks Kenji to look away.
愛花：えっと、着替えたいな。
健二：？ うん。
愛花：うん、じゃなくて。向こう向いてて。
健二：あ、そうか。
Kenji turns away so that he doesn’t see Manaka change.
愛花：…。
健二：…。

健二：…。
Manaka seems to be taking a long time to get changed.
Kenji wonders if he should call out to her.

They walk out of the hotel room and go for breakfast.
健二：よし、じゃあ、飯行こう。

They go to the hotel lobby for their breakfast.
健二：やっぱホテルの朝食といったらビュッフェだよな。
愛花：うん、楽しい。
健二：よし、俺はご飯とパン両方食べるぞ！
愛花：もう、おなか壊しちゃうよ？
健二：（そういうマナカちゃんも結構…）
愛花：…なに？
健二：はは、なんでも。ついでに飲み物取ってくる。
They have a light conversation as they eat.
健二：よし、行くか。そろそろ出る準備しよう。
愛花：うん。
They walk to the front desk to check out.
健二：いいホテルだったよな。
愛花：うん、また来たいな。
They then walk out the hotel.
愛花：伝説の思い出の場所、また行けるといいな。
健二：大丈夫だろ、俺たちなら。
Though there are many people around, Kenji manages to
find an opportunity to kiss Manaka.

They walk to the jetty.
The jetty
in real life is pretty close to the hotel.
健二：初島までは、ここから船だな。
愛花：船に乗るのって、わくわくするね。早く行こ？
After kissing, they take the boat to Hatsushima.
The boat
isn’t the kind of boat you take from Lumut to Pangkor Island, and definitely
not the kind of boat you take from Changi to Pulau Ubin.
健二：ふーん、中はこうなってるのか。
健二：（なんか面白いものないかな…）
Kenji looks around. Manaka walks in shortly after.
愛花：何か探してるの？
健二：そういうわけじゃないけど…なあ、エンジンって見られないのかな？
Unless it’s
a really old ship, I don’t think you will get to see the engine room.
愛花：え、わからないけど…。
健二：どこかな…。
愛花：もう、わたしは外に出てるからね？
健二：ああ、うん。

健二：おー、結構早い。気持ちいいな。
Manaka turns around with a serious look on her face.
愛花：あ、やっと来た。
健二：ああ、ごめんごめん。
愛花：ねえ、こういうところに立つと、映画の真似したくなるよね。
健二：（ベタだな…）
愛花：…バカにしてる。
健二：違うって。マナカちゃんらしくて、かわいいよな？
愛花：ほんとにバカにしてない？
Kenji evaluates his options

They arrive at Hatsushima.
健二：おー、着いたな。
愛花：うん、なんだかカワイイ島だね。
健二：はは、サイズ的にな。まずはどうしよっか。
愛花：…おなか、すいたな。
健二：よし。じゃあまずはなんか食べよう。
It’s unusually packed today at the pier, so they don’t
kiss.
愛花：行こう、あなた。
健二：ああ。
They arrive at the shop Megane-maru (めがね丸)
愛花：ねぇねぇ、ここにしよ？
健二：お、美味しそう。入るか。
愛花：ふふ。やっぱりお刺身が美味しいね。
健二：こっちの煮付けも美味しいぞ。食べる？
They talk as they have their lunch.
After lunch, they walk out of the eatery.
健二：さて、見つかるかな。伝説のビーチは。
愛花：うん、見つけよ。
They kiss outside the eatery before setting off to
find the legendary beach that they went to the first time there (21 December
2014).
愛花：行こう、あなた。
健二：ああ。
1300 hrs
As they walk on, they chance upon a shrine.
健二：あ、神社がある。
愛花：初木神社、だって。
健二：お、なんか伝説が書いてあるぞ。
愛花：伝説？
健二：これこれ。
愛花：初木姫物語…。
健二：どれどれ…。
…
愛花：初木姫の悲しい恋の物語…。
健二：ここは詳しいことまでは書いてないな。
愛花：どんなお話なんだろう。ビーチの伝説とも、何か関係があるのかな？
健二：んー、どうだろう。
愛花：たしかめたら、いいな。
They kiss at the shrine before setting off.
But before they continue on, Manaka gives Kenji one
more little peck on the cheek.
健二：わっ。
愛花：ふふ、新婚さんだもんね？
健二：（こんなマナカちゃん、ここでしか見られないかも）
1320 hrs
愛花：初島灯台。あまり大きくないんだね。なんだかかわいいかも。
健二：灯台って海岸沿いにあるイメージだけど、ここ島の真ん中だよな。小さい島だからかな。
愛花：上に登れるみたい。行ってみよっか。
Kenji evaluates his options

健二：よし、行くぞ！
愛花：うん、出発！
They climb to the observation deck of the lighthouse.
愛花：わあ…。
健二：おー、すごいな。全方位見渡せるぞ。
愛花：わたしたちはあそこの熱海港から来たんだね。あっちは伊東で、向こうは三浦半島と、房総半島！
健二：えっと…ほんとだ、下に書いてある。さすがだなマナカちゃん。
愛花：ふふ。
1500 hrs
愛花：たしかこのあたりだったんだけど…。
健二：だよな。おかしいな、なんでだろ…。
愛花：…。
健二：マナカちゃん…。
愛花：しょうがないよね、伝説だもん…でも、また行きたかったな。
They couldn't find the beach. Ah well.
Apparently
supervising the entire process isn’t the key for finding the legendary beach.
This bloody thing
is getting on my nerves. It’s been 2 years since this log has been started and
they have never been back to the beach since their first time there.
1600 hrs
They walk back to the jetty to return to the mainland.
健二：んーっ。旅行もそろそろ終わりか。
愛花：うん…。
健二：マナカちゃん…。ほら、行こう。
愛花：初島とも、お別れだね。
健二：ああ。
They take the ferry back to Atami.
健二：疲れてない？船に酔ったとか。
愛花：ううん、大丈夫。
They then walk to Atami station.
愛花：電車の時間まで、少しあるね。
健二：そうだな、ちょっとゆっくりするか。
2155 hrs
Apparently
the sequence from the train station back to Towano didn’t show up in the
calendar to be shown.
Eh, nothing
of value was lost anyway. If you really wanted to read it you could read the
previous vacations. It’s exactly the same anyway.
Kenji returns home and receives a message from Manaka.
愛花：今回の旅行もすごく楽しかったね。こうして思い出がどんどん増えていくのって、すごいな…
健二：特に夜は…
愛花：もう…
Kenji goes to sleep, thinking about how he should
challenge the next week.
健二：明日は月曜、まだ一週間がんばるか！
Kenji goes to sleep. He imagines Manaka telling him
来る！ブラインドをあげて！
